life of faith

dinner with the professor

just had dinner with prof kwame and cherie. he gave us a treat at the kent ridge guild house, in appreciation of our ‘escort’ service for sde’s 40th anni dinner earlier in nov. it was a special time when he began sharing his faith (he’s a believer too) with us and heard some amazing stories of his conversion, from someone who came from a deep family history of idol worship in Ghana to a strong believer who preaches the gospel to unbelievers when opportunities arise. i’m encouraged by his evangelistic heart, and thank God for transforming his life to be influencing the people whom he gets to meet everyday.

one thing which he said struck me, and that was about his response during a service’s praise and worship. he couldn’t bring himself to sing the lyrics, “Lord i love you more than anything”, because he knew that those words had to be meant from his whole heart that God was to him more than anything. he actually cried to God then to have mercy on him (reminds me of the parable of the pharisee and the tax collector). i see such an attitude of humility, and wonder how many of us, due to the normalcy of expressing ourselves during worship, sing out loud without going through the depth of the meaning of these lyrics. if we were to delve deeper into the lyrics, we would actually find certain songs hard to sing because if we don’t mean them with our hearts and minds, it would be a lie, just like filthy rags before God. and we would surely need God’s mercy because only He knows our heart when we come before Him in worship.
