self-control

okay, time for facebook? twitter? or.. how about youtube? this is a pic which i took from another blog, and i guess it’s somewhat a true parody of what many of us may be going through this holidays, without the normal routine of lectures and tutorials and school life. we could be turning to these forms of entertainment, in the name of “rejuvenating” and “relaxing”, but i was just reminded of our need for self-control in this aspect.
Proverbs 25:28 “Like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who lacks self-control”.
it’s probably the easiest to let our guard down during such breaks, taking more time for other outlets of leisure such as korean/japanese dramas, shopping for example. and God’s word is so wise, it’s precisely during these times when we allow ourselves to indulge in these that we are not actively guarding our faith, allowing the devil to sneak into our spiritual lives and attack us, starting from the aspects which we are most unaware of. it could be certain insecurities or unhealthy desires which are surfaced as we watch those videos, or feelings of envy and discontentment with what we have as we see some friends who seem to be “having it all” from what we gather from facebook. i hear of people who feel depressed after going on facebook, because they seem to have less of a “life” as compared to their more happening friends, after looking at people’s photos and wall postings. i wonder how much do these feelings also ring a bell in us?
i’m not saying that we stop ourselves from such entertainment totally. afterall, God created us to be relational beings and that’s part of why we enjoy connecting with others so much through social networking sites, that apparently have been increasing exponentially over recent years. however, there must be a healthy balance, and what i’m hoping is for us to discern the level of engagement and dependence on these forms of leisure, and to practise self-control whenever possible. instead of only filling your time with “cafe world” or “twitter updates”, why not take the time to also read God’s word and spend time on things that matter in His eyes?
even if there seems to be an abundance of time to while away, do make the most of what you have. idleness takes our focus away from the life which we are called for. live a life that is worthy of the Lord!
